Bampton Village

Wheelgate House is located in the Market Square in the heart of the picturesque village of Bampton in West Oxfordshire. Sitting on the edge of the Cotswolds, the village is one of the oldest in the UK and has retained its charm boasting many attractive 17th and 18th century houses.

Now the setting for the fictional TV series Downton Abbey, the village lies, more or less, in the centre of a circle formed by Burford, Witney, Standlake, Faringdon and Lechlade. London and Birmingham are just an hour and half's drive away so we are well suited for a weekend away from the city.

The village is also just 2 miles from the River Thames making Wheelgate House the ideal base for walking the Thames Path.

Boats are available for hire at Radcot and Lechlade, only a few miles away. We have a taxi service in the village and there are buses to Carterton, Witney and Oxford from opposite the house. Train stations are just a short drive away at Oxford, Swindon, Didcot and Charlbury.

Downton Abbey

Many village scenes from the popular TV series Downton Abbey, were filmed in Bampton with the action taking place in and around the historic 12th century St Mary’s Church. A stroll along Rosemary Lane just across Market Square will take you to Church View and the locations for the Downton Pub, Cottage Hospital, the Crawley house and the Church.
